When uploading a spreadsheet, you may receive the message:
“Unable to open file… File may not be a valid Excel workbook.”

Although the file name and visible formatting may appear correct, hidden formatting, often picked up when copying data between sources, can cause Excel to behave unpredictably and prevent Donorfy from processing the file.

Fix the Excel Workbook Error

Follow these steps to remove hidden formatting and create a clean file for upload:

  1. Open the original Excel workbook.

  2. Copy all data from the sheet.

  3. Create a new Excel workbook.

  4. Paste the data using Paste as Values to remove hidden formatting.

  5. Set any date fields to Short Date (dd/mm/yyyy).

  6. Rename the worksheet tab to match the required upload process.

    • This determines how the File Uploader processes your file.

  7. Choose Save As and save your workbook.

  8. Upload the newly saved file to Donorfy.

The upload should now complete successfully without the error message.
